At the start of each school day, my student engage in a morning meeting. This time allows students to share different ideas, beliefs, and thoughts with one another. Each day, all students have an opportunity to share, and students learn the importance of being active listeners and being respectful of other classmates. If an issue arises throughout the day, we can call a class meeting to discuss problems and come up with solutions as a group.
In my classroom, creating the procedures is a whole group activity. The students take the lead, and throughout the school year, we mold the procedures to accommodate our class as it evolves. In doing this, students take pride and help hold each other accountable.
Using what I have learned about my students, I find ways to connect my lesson plans to their personal experiences. This includes finding quality literature that students can see themselves in. Along with this, inviting community members and families into the class to share their culture, beliefs, and values. This allows students to both see themselves in the work they do and learn about other cultures within our community.
